Dominik Schürmann ist der Sohn des Jazzpianisten Niggi Schürmann. Durch seinen Vater kam er schon früh mit Musik – insbesondere mit dem Jazz – in Berührung. Im Alter von sechs Jahren begann er mit dem Klavierspiel, wechselte später jedoch zum Kontrabass. Rasch etablierte er sich als fester Bestandteil der Schweizer Jazzszene und arbeitet seither immer wieder mit international renommierten Jazzgrössen zusammen.

Im Laufe seiner Karriere entstanden zahlreiche Projekte, Tourneen und Konzerte mit bekannten Musikerinnen und Musikern wie Hendrik Meurkens, Max Ionata, Martin Sasse, Frits Landesbergen, Luis Diego Bonilla, Jorge Rossy, Karl Ratzer, George Gruntz, Isla Eckinger, Oscar Klein, Domenic Landolf, Adrian Mears, Adam Taubitz, Thilo Wagner, Gregor Beck, Yuri Storione, Joe Alterman und vielen weiteren. Schürmann trat in zahlreichen Jazzclubs sowie auf internationalen Jazzfestivals im In- und Ausland auf.

Seit 1998 ist er Mitglied von Thomas Moeckels „Centrio“. Mit dem vielseitigen Schweizer Musiker verbindet ihn eine langjährige musikalische Freundschaft, aus der unzählige gemeinsame Projekte hervorgegangen sind.

Neben seiner Tätigkeit als gefragter Sideman veröffentlichte Schürmann mehrere eigene CD-Produktionen – darunter die von Schweizer Radio SRF 2 coproduzierten Alben Dahaana und Nothing Is As It Seems (beide mit der Hardbop-Formation Compulsion), das 2017 mit dem Trio Gutfleisch–Schürmann–Frey entstandene Sambâle sowie The Seagull’s Serenade (2023). Letzteres enthält neun Eigenkompositionen, die Schürmann gemeinsam mit seinem langjährigen musikalischen Partner, dem Pianisten Tilman Günther, für ein 13-köpfiges Ensemble arrangierte.

Sein Album Upswing (2016) gehörte zu den erfolgreichsten Schweizer Jazzproduktionen auf internationalen Downloadplattformen. Einen besonderen Erfolg feierte Schürmann zudem mit seiner Komposition Moons Ago, die er 2022 gemeinsam mit dem italienischen Saxophonisten Max Ionata einspielte. Der Titel wurde in die weltweit zweitbeliebteste Spotify-Playlist „Coffee Table Jazz“ aufgenommen und millionenfach gestreamt.

Schürmann ist sowohl national als auch international mit verschiedenen Projekten aktiv. Sein Spiel zeichnet sich durch musikalische Leidenschaft, Sensibilität, harmonisches Gespür, präzises Timing und grosse Erfahrung aus. Ob als Begleiter oder Solist – er überzeugt durch Ausdruckskraft, Virtuosität und stilistische Vielseitigkeit. Allen Genres, ob Jazz, Blues oder lateinamerikanische Musik, verleiht er mit Begeisterung und Eleganz seine persönliche Note.

Darüber hinaus wirkte Schürmann an Theater- und Musicalproduktionen mit und war in zahlreichen Radio- und Fernsehsendungen zu hören. Als Bassist ist er bislang auf über 50 CD-Produktionen vertreten.

Dominik Schürmann is the son of jazz pianist Niggi Schürmann. Through his father, he was introduced to music – especially jazz – at an early age. He began playing the piano at the age of six but later switched to the double bass. Before long, he established himself as a permanent fixture in the Swiss jazz scene and has since collaborated with many internationally renowned jazz artists.

Over the course of his career, Schürmann has been involved in numerous projects, tours, and concerts with well-known musicians such as Hendrik Meurkens, Max Ionata, Martin Sasse, Frits Landesbergen, Luis Diego Bonilla, Jorge Rossy, Karl Ratzer, George Gruntz, Isla Eckinger, Oscar Klein, Domenic Landolf, Adrian Mears, Adam Taubitz, Thilo Wagner, Gregor Beck, Yuri Storione, Joe Alterman, and many others. He has performed in numerous jazz clubs as well as at international jazz festivals both in Switzerland and abroad.

Since 1998, he has been a member of Thomas Moeckel’s “Centrio.” A long-standing musical friendship links him with the versatile Swiss musician, resulting in countless joint projects over the years.

In addition to being a sought-after sideman, Schürmann has released several of his own CD productions – including the albums Dahaana and Nothing Is As It Seems (both recorded with the hard bop ensemble Compulsion and co-produced by Swiss Radio SRF 2), Sambâle (2017) with the trio Gutfleisch–Schürmann–Frey, and The Seagull’s Serenade (2023). The latter features nine original compositions that Schürmann arranged together with his long-time musical partner, pianist Tilman Günther, for a 13-piece ensemble.

His 2016 album Upswing was among the most successful Swiss jazz releases on international download platforms. Schürmann also achieved remarkable success with his composition Moons Ago, recorded in 2022 with Italian saxophonist Max Ionata. The track was included in Spotify’s globally popular “Coffee Table Jazz” playlist – the second most-followed jazz playlist worldwide – and has been streamed millions of times.

Schürmann is active both nationally and internationally with various projects. His playing is characterized by musical passion, sensitivity, harmonic awareness, precise timing, and extensive experience. Whether as an accompanist or soloist, he impresses with expressiveness, virtuosity, and stylistic versatility. Across all genres – jazz, blues, or Latin music – he brings his personal touch with enthusiasm and elegance.

In addition, Schürmann has contributed to theatre and musical productions and has been featured in numerous radio and television broadcasts. As a bassist, he has so far appeared on more than 50 CD productions.
